In the Fall of 1998 I took a class in book arts taught by Genie Shenk at The Athenaeum, a library of music and art in La Jolla, Califoria. The class was a revelation to me. Genie is a wonderful teacher and guided us through an understanding of artist books as composed of three basic elements: structure, text and image. I soon realized that the artist book is probably MY medium since I have always done both writing and image-making and have struggled to find time for both. Genie taught us a variety of Western and Eastern methods of book binding and later on in the Spring of 1999 I took her class in paper decorating, in which she taught various methods of marbling and dying papers to be used in book-binding.
Combining the elements of hands-on craft with the more cerebral elements of text and image makes book arts very satisfying for me. I am also finding that I can integrate my knowledge of computer graphics into the artist book process. Now that I'm living in Mendocino I've been able to continue my study of book arts through classes at the Mendocino Art Center, taking classes with Marylee BytheRiver, Chris Rolik and Howard Munson.
Below are some of the artist books I've made.

This is the first book I made in Genie Shenk's class. It is an accordion book, about 2 by 3 inches in page size. My good qualities are lined up on one side of the book and my bad qualities appear on the other side of the pages. I like the way I was able to pull my good and bad traits together into one piece, just as they are all together in my personality.

This model for an accordion book includes scans of all the colored pencil mandalas I've made along with the versions done in Adobe Illustrator, with a text describing the psychological process of making these images. For more information on my mandalas see the mandala page.

This art for this accordion book was made by scanning a piece of my handmade paste paper and changing the hue in Photoshop. The text was burned into the image using Levels in Photoshop. The text reads, Some Times There Is No Need For Words.

These pamphlet stitched booklets are made by printing scans of photos on both sides of coated paper and then folding and trimming to create an 8-page book. These two commemorate the Mendocino Village Garden Tour and the Mendocino County Fair in 1999.

This three-layer accordion book can be folded back on itself to create a star shape. The images on the back layer are various monsters and villains drawn by the Mexican artist Posada. The text on the yellow paper reads: "The anger and fear that live in the unconsicous can be covered over by art and craft but cannot be destroyed."
