Grandmothers for Peace

Grandmothers for Peace, a non-profit organization, was formed in May of 1982 at the height of the Cold War, by Barbara Wiedner (1928-2001). In 1981, she became aware of 150 nuclear weapons at Mather Air Force Base -- just 15 minutes from her home in Sacramento, California. She realized that if things did not change, her grandchildren could be part of the last generation on earth. That thought catapulted her "out of my kitchen'' to join others at the gates of Mather in protest of the nuclear arms race. Her granddaughter made her a sign that read "Grandmother for Peace'' which she held at weekly protests. That sign attracted a great deal of attention from the public and the media.

After the defeat of Senator McCain and Senator Feingold's first attempt to remove unregulated "soft" money from campaigns in 1995, Haddock became interested in campaign reform and led a petition movement. On January 1, 1999, at the age of 89, she began a walk across the country to demonstrate her concern for the issue, walking ten miles each day for fourteen months and making speeches along the way. When she arrived in Washington, D.C., Granny D was met by 2,200 people, representing a wide variety of reform groups. She continues to work for election reform.
